Coronavirus has officially been declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. What exactly is it?
The coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, is a combination of multiple infections such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS(Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). The symptoms are very similar to that of the flu, but the long term effects can be detrimental to those 50 and above and with weak immune systems that can be caused by lung disease heart disease, and autoimmune disease.
The virus spreads quickly with any physical contact. The virus can live on metal objects for 6-12 hours and can live on fabrics for 6-12 hours, however most detergent and sanitizing wipes can rid the virus.
COVID-19 clearly has an impact on how the world is operating at the moment. As of recently, in NYS, Governor Andrew Cuomo has cancelled all face-to-face classes at SUNY and CUNY colleges and universities, making the classes move to online teaching for the rest of the academic semester. And in Buffalo, both of the St. Patrick’s Day parades scheduled for this weekend were cancelled.
The NHL has also suspended the hockey season indefinitely until they decide what the next steps will be. This decision comes after national sports teams around the world have played without spectators.
In New York City, the virus has caused some famous cultural institutions to close down temporarily, including the Metropolitan Museum, Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and the New York Philharmonic. Around the world there are closings at theaters, concerts, and museums as well.
Reported cases of the virus among Hollywood actors might also cause some production issues for some of our favorite movies and TV shows. It was recently announced that actors Tom Hanks Rita Wilson both have the COVID-19 virus. Another report stated that a crew member of the CW’s hit show “Riverdale” was confirmed to have the virus and that the show’s production is temporarily halted. The crew member is currently seeking out medical treatment.
Last night, President Trump announced that a travel ban on foreign nationals from 26 European countries will go into effect. The ban is set to be in effect for the next 30 days.
The stock market has and continues to take a toll because of the virus. Earlier today, it was reported that the Dow Jones significantly dropped by 2,000 points following President Trump’s travel ban announcement.
If you begin to experience any symptoms of COVID-19, call your local health provider immediately for testing centers in your area.
