On Sunday night, 18-year-old Billie Eilish swept the Grammys being the second artist and first woman to take home the “Big Four.” This includes album, song, and record of the year as well as best new artist. The only other artist to do this was Christopher Cross almost 40 years ago.
On top of these great achievements, Eilish became the youngest artist to win album and record of the year.
Eilish could not have done it all, however, without her incredibly talented brother, FINNEAS. FINNEAS shared in her successes as he too, took part in album, song, and record of the year. Additionally, he won producer of the year, non-classical, and best-engineered album, non-classical. Similar to his younger sister, he became the youngest producer to win producer of the year, non-classical.
This sibling power-duo was born in Los Angeles to a family of entertainers. At the age of 13, Eilish had already recorded her first hit single, “Ocean Eyes,” produced by FINNEAS in his childhood bedroom.
Now, Eilish is setting the tone, inspiring all young women alike to unapologetically be themselves. She proves this to be true in both her music and her style. She has been known to wear very over-sized clothing with bright colors and lots of jewelry. Yet, there is a method to the madness.
In a Calvin Klein commercial, Eilish got real about why she dresses the way she does. “No one can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath.” In order to prevent judgment and sexualization at such a young age, Eilish wears baggy clothing. The artist has received much criticism over her look, however, points out the misogyny behind it. She explains that if a man were to wear baggy clothing, no one would have anything to say. Yet, since she is a woman, people expect her to “dress like a girl,” meaning she should wear tighter clothing to show her figure.
However, Billie Eilish is not just changing the game due to her style. She is changing it by being original and doing it herself. Eilish and FINNEAS have continued to produce their music in his childhood bedroom, writing their own songs, and even recording them in hotel rooms on tour. They do it their own way, on their own terms, and clearly, it’s working.
Eilish is original and raw in every interview that she does, never pretending to be someone she’s not. She makes her music videos freaky as she enjoys utilizing people’s fears. She even colors her hair uniquely so that her roots are bright green.
This 18-year-old is exactly what this country’s young women need. Someone who is publicly recognizing that it is okay to be different or even “weird.” She is proving to the rising generation of women that they do not need to remain in the constraints they have been put in for years. You don’t need to wear tight clothes to be famous. You don’t need to be what everyone else is. You don’t need anyone but yourself in order to get where you want to be.
